BMI for Women
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening tool that compares weight to height. For women, BMI can provide a general idea of whether body weight falls within a healthy range, but it does not capture every aspect of health.
To calculate your BMI instantly, use our BMI calculator. It supports both metric and imperial units.
What is a healthy BMI for women?
For most adult women, BMI is interpreted using standard categories:
- Underweight: below 18.5
- Normal weight: 18.5–24.9
- Overweight: 25–29.9
- Obesity: 30 and above
These ranges are associated with health risks at a population level. Higher BMI values are linked to conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and joint problems.
Why BMI may not tell the full story for women
BMI does not measure body fat directly or show where fat is stored. Hormonal changes, pregnancy history, and natural differences in body composition can all influence weight without necessarily reflecting poor health.
BMI also does not account for:
- Muscle mass vs. body fat
- Changes during menopause
- Bone density differences
- Overall fitness level
Because of this, BMI should be treated as a general guide rather than a medical diagnosis.
How women should use BMI
BMI is most helpful when used alongside other health indicators. If your BMI is outside the normal range, you may want to:
- Consider waist size and body composition
- Review activity level and eating habits
- Talk with a healthcare professional if you have concerns
